1. Shut off air supply to the tank and empty it of water.
2. Using a spanner wrench or laser-cut wood tool, remove retaining rings
from diffusers.
3. While wearing gloves, use a screwdriver to pry the ceramic element and gasket out of the plenum base. Place the waste ceramic elements and gaskets in a small basket & it is helpful to have a pulley set up on the side of the basin to lift the basket out of the tank.
4. After all ceramic elements are removed, clean out the pipes & diffuser plenum bases with water. Check & tighten all pipe joints. Check support stands (careful not to over-tighten support clamps which may be intentionally loose to allow for thermal expansion and contraction of plastic pipe).
5. Remove new plastic backer plates from boxes & place inside of diffuser plenum bases. Install a membrane over the backer plate ensuring that the O-ring of the membrane seats properly against the backer plate.
6. With a spray bottle, moisten the outer perimeter of each membrane to provide lubrication, then screw & tighten the retaining ring back onto the plenum base using the spanner wrench or laser-cut wood tool.
7. Fill tank with water to 6 to 12" above tops of diffusers, and slowly
bring the air back on. Inspect visually for leaks or membranes which do
not bubble sufficiently. Once leaks have been fixed and bubble distribution
is good, tank may be filled with wastewater.
